Digital Evangelist: Twitter for Your NAACP Unit

Last July when I was charged with training NAACP members in digital media, I thought—here is a great opportunity for me to share my love for digital media with the NAACP family.  With that challenge in mind, I aim to teach folks about mobile, social media and everything in between.  My weekly blog will update you on my trainings; and give you info about how to sign up and equip yourself with the tools you need to disseminate your message well for your NAACP branch or chapter.

This week’s webinar is Twitter 101—the topic will be “How to Use Twitter Effectively for Your Unit.” The webinar will highlight best practices for organizers using Twitter.

Have you been curious about using Twitter for your NAACP branch or chapter but aren’t sure where to start? Register and join me for the webinar this Thursday at 9:15pm.

Here are a few ways to use Twitter:

Reaching out to press about upcoming events and actions

Many reporters are on Twitter and use it to find new story ideas. Twitter is great for reaching out to media and following up to thank them for covering the work of your unit in their media outlet.

Publicizing events and meetings

Twitter is a great way to get even more people talking about and attending events and meetings in your community. You can reach a broader audience that cultivates new NAACP membership growth.

Taking part of conversations about issues you care about

No matter what issues matter to your branch, someone on Twitter is talking about it. Hashtags (word and/or words with # in front that allows one to search and identify the subject of a Tweet and/or other social media content) allow you to search for particular topics and be a part of the conversations already taking place.
