Digital Evangelist: Using Facebook for Organizing

Last July when I was charged with training NAACP members in digital media, I thought—here is a great opportunity for me to share my love for digital media with the NAACP family. With that challenge in mind, I aim to teach folks about mobile, social media and everything in between. My weekly blog will update you on my trainings; and give you info about how to sign up and equip yourself with the tools you need to disseminate your message well for your NAACP branch or chapter.
This week’s webinar, Facebook 101, will discuss the benefits of branches using Facebook Fan Pages instead of personal profile pages. We will also go over the best practices for using Facebook. There are two main reasons why your branch should switch to a Fan Page if they are using a personal profile page:
Soon Facebook will crack down on personal profile pages that don’t belong to actual people
It’s best to create a fan page before Facebook forces you to shut down your branch’s profile page. It is possible to convert your profile page to a Fan Page if you are worried about losing the connections you have on your personal profile page.
Profile Pages have a 5,000 friend limit
Because you can only have 5,000 friends on a profile page, you limit how many people you can engage. A Fan Page, on the other hand, allows an unlimited amount of people to “like” your page and see what your branch is up to via your posts.
