Financial Freedom Campaign Launches Satellite Program

On the weekend of September 23rd through the 25th, the NAACP’s Economic Department officially launched its Financial Freedom Campaign via its “Train the Trainers” training.  Over the course of the three days, representatives from the 21 micro-grant satellite units met to engage in constructive dialog; learn best practices and were connected to valuable resources. These three components were provided to assist them with their own financial education/literacy workshops that they will be implementing over the course of the next year. The 21 units, consisting of a number of state conferences, adult branches, and youth councils, from across the nation, were granted awards of $4,000 each to host and facilitate a series of workshops that focus on topics that are most pressing in their communities. These topics include (but are not limited to): Foreclosure Prevention and Recovery, Credit Counseling, Financial Planning, Community Benefit Agreements, and the like. Studies show that African Americans and other Minorities are disproportionately affected by the lack of knowledge of in these areas.

The “Train the Trainer” training opened with a reception on the evening of September 23 2011.  During this reception, branch representatives were able to meet and greet their fellow NAACP branch leaders and national staff, as well as a few NAACP national partners, including representatives from Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Operation Hope, Financial Planners Association, NeighborWorks America, etc. President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous, was gracious enough to give a few words of encouragement to the unit leaders, as well an overview of the vision for the future of the NAACP’s Economic Department and the Financial Freedom Campaign.

The following day and a half included workshops and presentations by the NAACP Economic Staff and National Partners; including presentations on the NAACP & Racial Economic Inequality given by Senior Director of the Economic Programs, Dedrick Muhammad; Marketing 101 presented by Erika Laws, NAACP Acting VP of Marketing; Foreclosure Prevention presented by Rullah Price of Wells Fargo and Credit Rehabilitation by Jahi Davis, VP of Operation Hope DC.
On the evening of Saturday, September 24th, participants visited the MLK memorial site, as a highlight to their Washington, DC experience.


At the training’s closing, on Sunday September 25th, Branch leaders and other training participants presented the NAACP Economics programs staff with a card, expressing their thanks and appreciation for all the hard work that was involved.
